“There’s a time disjunction involved here. I was actually stuck in Lost Angeles for a while because I missed my flight out (by a whole fucking day!!!), but I did not go from Joshua Tree to LA so imagine it’s like a Tarentino film where time is nonlinear, folding back and forward on itself. I just got excited because I finally found a punk rock art student girl Lindsay who was willing to risk fucking up her her CVS film developing machine by running spliced/taped film through it in the name of art. I told a half dozen places what I wanted to do and that it has been known to gum up machines because of the taped splice, and they all said they didn’t want to do it. Teenage punker girl Lindsay listened to my reasons and said she would try it and would rescue as much of my negatives as she could if/when it jammed up. Making homemade redscale film involves pulling a roll out in total darkness, cutting it off, flipping it inside-out, and then splicing it back together with scotch tape so the emulsion layers are reversed. I told her to do her best. It jammed up. Punk rocker Lindsay did the cool thing and had to kill a few shots off the negative strip to save the rest, but she sat down with a scissors and unjammed the machine and totally pulled it off. Lindsay is the kind of person you can count on when things get tight, and she actually got really interested in the whole redscale concept. She gets it. She got tipped $10.00 afterwards under the table because you have to pay to work outside the system. The kids are alright.

The black and white shots are Ilford XP-2 chromagenic (black and white that develops like C-41 color print film) film and the red ones are homemade redscale film, everything here was shot through a Lomo LCA because waving a shiny digital camera around on skid row would have caused some friction, and waving my big Nikon motordrive film rig would have been like waving a handful of hundred dollar bills around in front of people who were having conversations with crack demons and drinking Lysol. “

There is genius on the Internet.  As above – a friend of my daughter Ashleigh.  To see as they see – see see see.

========================================================

read these words by Stacey.  Close your eyes.  See it?

The Surfliner train runs out of Union Station, on the edge of downtown LA, and I had to make a shuttle bus between Union Station and LAX so I had some unexpected standbye time. The internet said that skid row was within walking distance and, seeing a chance to mix some alcoholic imbibing with photography and adventure, I walked the mile and got into some strange territory. The internets didn’t tell me that skid row was now becoming Little Tijuana Mexico with all it’s streetfood and vendors. Incredible smells saturated the air as sausages and onions sizzled on mobile grills and friendly Mexican faces walked around the incoherant winos sitting on the sidewalk. I know barely enough Espanol to order food, and these people didn’t speak English, but I stuffed myself with the greatest tacos and horchata and huge slices of melon as I stepped over the junkies nodding off in doorways. I was glad I was shooting with a Lomo, it doesn’t really register as a camera in most street people’s perceptions, and if it does it registers as an old clunky cheap toy. Which it is, kind of… *

Tom Cruise

These guys are small potatoes. How many CENTURIES has mainstream religion caused mischief and misery? How many children have grown up afraid they or their loved ones will burn in a lake of fire? How many fools have terminated their lives in misguided belief that 77 virgins are awaiting them if they blow themselves up? How many millions of dollars has the LDS church sunk into homophobic legislation to prevent people who love each other from marrying?

Cruelity to Bees

I invite comments.  But read the charges first.

bee-face

This was something I did not expect to find.

But here it is.  Is the “end of history” inevitable?

How different is the life of a beekeeper’s bee

from the life of a wild bee (there are still millions of wild bees) they just don’t have much to do with the food products you can buy in the mainstream of food outlets (such as Publix).   The tame bees are doing the pollination of most of the corporate farming crops – which in turn are used to make the branded food products - I think – if you know the score please comment – as is the case with so many things that effect all 7 billion of us – the life of the planet - this issue is in the hands of a few beekeepers, okay thousands - the little I have been able to find suggests that the problem of colony disappearance has not solved only delayed…

I am not saying time to PANIC but I am saying time to THINK.  And reading the Vegan argument many may ask “what is so terrible about the life of a corporate bee compared say to the life of a corporate human”.  But what if the bees keep dying?  I guess it comes down to whose problem is it?

A friend of mine I greatly respect says it is all a matter of asking the right question.  That the question frames the ans.  I suppose it does.  A commerical  solution might be the replacement of bees with a robust insect that does not make honey but does pollinate the crops.   If you goggle you’ll discover people who keep bees as pets.  But enough of my musing?

Bye Bye Bees

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.”—Albert Einstein

Here is my two cents worth

Long ago crops were pollinated by local bees.  Not enough bees for one big 7,000 acre blueberry farm blooming all at once. So a beekeeper shows up with a few 18 wheeler’s of rent-a-bee  thereby putting an incredible  number of bees on the job with the blueberries then it is off to California to do the Pecan Nuts.  The primary cash flow for these mobile  beekeepers is not honey.  It is the  pollination – and yeah – they’ll selling the bee’s honey - and feeding the bees corn sugar – what we get in our soft drinks.  Did you know we were so far down this monoculture road?  This is no way for a bee to live and many won’t.

Your Inner Reptile.

What is proposed to be done, no one dare speak as there is  no way to distinguish our acts from those of the most savage brute, except by way of an elaborate detailing, hence therefore what we have in truth is  the work of a superior malice and ferocity far beyond the reach of any simple brute? The broadest characteristic of all animals, including man, is selfishness. In man it reaches its highest form and becomes vanity, pride, and a ridiculous sense of self-importance.

And so it is that here on Earth Man alone is conscious of his existence, character, and purpose; he alone over the 100s of thousands of years has lived lives that encouraged the  rational development a frontal cortex to suppresses the most egregious impulses of the reptile within and the lactating  forgetful mummy between.

We are of three minds. three minds  The amazing event is that most of us are parked.  Just a few CEOs are on facebook and fewer get twitter and almost none are on it.  Likewise here at castlehom.com there is a message but it is lost in the signal to noise ratio implicit this medium.

Three arguments for DNA is Destiny.

Biotechnology and genetic engineering

“My book The Sun, the Genome, and the Internet (1999) describes a vision of green technology enriching villages all over the world and halting the migration from villages to megacities. The three components of the vision are all essential: the sun to provide energy where it is needed, the genome to provide plants that can convert sunlight into chemical fuels cheaply and efficiently, the Internet to end the intellectual and economic isolation of rural populations. With all three components in place, every village in Africa could enjoy its fair share of the blessings of civilisation.”

Freeman Dyson cheerfully admits his record as a prophet is mixed, but

Three arguments for DNA is Destiny.  1./ Freeman never earned a real Ph.D.  2./ Mum didn’t raise Esther.  3./ Esther didn’t attend classes at Harvard. Esp if you know the unpublished truths about these three amazing creatures: comment.
